この本を読むと、「懐かしめる過去があることの大切さを知れる」というベネフィットを得られます。

デジタルデトックスではないのですが、自分のPCデータを眺めていたら、かつて利用していたコミュニティーで投稿した洋書の読書感想文が出てきたので、再掲します。

英単語を調べられるaclさんので、かつて利用者のコミュニティーがありました。

日記などの投稿が出来たのですが、現在、閉鎖されています。

当時は日本語と、それに対する英訳も併記して掲載していました。

Facebookで友達が「映画観た」「よかった」とコメントしているのを見て興味を持ちました。

映画「恋人たちのパレード」と合わせて話します。

物語はただの恋物語ではなく、アメリカの昔を見ることが出来る歴史小説です。

「歴史上の人物」の話ではないけれど、主人公ジェイコブの若かりし頃を当時のアメリカの情景をまぜて描いています。

ジェイコブには忘れられない思い出があります。

それは、彼が働くサーカスが歴史的大混乱を起こした際、「彼女」が棒を降り下ろし、「ひどい男」の頭を殴り倒した瞬間。

現在九十いくつの彼は介護施設にて晩年を過ごしていますが、その時のことは今でも鮮明に覚えています。

学校卒業を目前に控えたジェイコブは事故で両親を亡くし、学費の借金のため自宅も抵当に入れられ、そのまま家を飛び出します。

途方に暮れるジェイコブは見かけた汽車に衝動的に飛び乗ります。

それは「Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show」というサーカス一座の汽車。

獣医の勉強をしていたことを買われ、ジェイコブはサーカスの獣医として仲間に加わります。

孤独なジェイコブを癒してくれたのは、立ち寄った町で一座に加わった象のロージーと、一座の座長の妻マーリーナ。

ポーランド語のみを理解するロージーの才能を一番に見出だしたことで、ジェイコブは次第に一座に溶け込んでいきます。

ロージーと組み、ショーを行うマーリーナとも惹かれ合っていきます。

しかし、これは道ならぬ恋。

自分を抑えるジェイコブですが、座長でありマーリーナの夫のオーガストの嫉妬深さ、動物や座員への無慈悲さに耐えられなくなったマーリーナは、オーガストと決別を決意。

ジェイコブはマーリーナへの横恋慕でオーガストからの命の危険を感じ、一刻も早くマーリーナと脱走することを心に決めたまさにその時、興行中のサーカスで歴史に残る大脱走stampedeが起きてしまうのです。

主人公の若かりし頃を振り返り、誰かに語り継ぐ物語はよく聞きますが、「恋人たちのパレード」では、九十いくつの主人公が家族の輪から外され、自分の存在の意味を訴えるテーマが隠れています。

高齢の自分をまるで「人間扱いしない」と感じさせる接し方をする看護師達、顔を出すのは「義務だと感じさせる」家族(子供達も当然高齢です)。

思い出の中の自分は根なし草ですがより生き生きし、現在の彼とよい対比です。

自分の意のままにならない介護施設という高齢者を守る環境で、本当に生きた場所はどこだったのか。

家族や世間から取り残された余生を過ごすジェイコブは物語の最後、施設の近くに興行に来たサーカスの青年と心を通わせ、自分の居場所を見つけるのでした。

I knew this book by seeing its name on friend's comments on Facebook: they watched the movie which was adapted from the book, and they commented it was a good one.

I read the book and figured out it was not only about a love story, but also a historical novel which you can learn an American history.

Jacob, the leading character, is not a famous historical person, but the readers can see those days of America through him.

Jacob has a memory which he could not get rid of.

He was at his work place, the circus, and it was when the most memorable stampede occurred, he saw "her" striking down a rod at the head of the "horrible man."

Now Jacob is ninety something years old and lives in a carehouse, but his memory never fade.

Young Jacob lost his parents by an accident before his graduation, so did his house because his parents left a debt for his school tuition.

Pennyless Jacob ran from his home, and saw a trane coming from the railroad.

He instantly jumped on that trane, and found out it was "Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show," where his destiny began as a vet.

Jacob was lonely in the circus, but two characters healed his wound: Rosie, an elephant that the circus leader August bought at one of a town to make show for his wife; Marlena, wife of August.

First they failed to tame Rosie because she never listened to anyone, but Jacob, immigrant and fluent of Poland, was first to find out Rosie could understand Poland words only, Rosie finally joined the show and Jacob was gradually welcomed by the members of circus.

Jacob was also attracted to Marlena who performs a show with Rosie, but both knew their affection were forbidden.

Jacob first kept his feelings to Marlena, but when she could no longer stand for August's jealousy and cruel attitude towards the circus members, animals, even his wife, Marlena decided to walk away from August. Jacob then decided to run from circus with Marlena because he knew he was in danger with his life from jealous and cruel August and his clues.

Just before their runaway, the stampede, which later became famous incident of those days in history, occurred.

There are many books that tell story of a person's youth and the listener and pass down the incident, but "Water for Elephants" appeals readers the meaning why person exists.

Old Jacob now feels he is deserted from his family and social ring.

Although people in carehouse treat him nice, Jacob feels as if he is treated like an old baby who needs someone's help (he is fine ninety something years old man).

His children who are of course all old come to see him, with loving heart, but Jacob knows they come to see their old father as if it is their duty.

The book well illustrates the comparison of both old and young Jacob: in the memory, young Jacob does not have stable life yet he lives lively; old Jacob has stable place to be cared and loving family but complains everything.

His life of later years questions the readers : Where is the place you could feel you are living a lively life?

In the end of the story, Jacob meets a guy from a circus stationed near his carehouse and finds where he wants to spend his very last time as he and a guy understand each other.
